POWERFUL Stress Relaxation Techniques
Stress can be triggered by almost any negative
emotion: fear, guilt, anger, frustration, sadness,
etc. It can make you nervous or anxious, tenses your
muscles, raises your blood pressure. While some level of stress is actually healthy, prolonged or significant
levels of stress can be very unhealthy. If you are prone to
stress, then learning some stress relaxation techniques can provide you with short term relief, and long term
health benefits.

The first step is to recognize when you are stressed. Sometimes that's easy, but often you tell
yourself that you are fine, when in fact your muscles have tensed up, your heart rate has increased and your
breathing is more shallow. These are all signs of elevated stress levels. While you might think you are
fine, very often, when stress kicks in, we don't think as effectively and we don't listen to others as effectively,
we are less in touch with our own emotions, and our ability to communicate is diminished.
BREATHING TO REDUCE
STRESS
The most fundamental of all the
stress relaxation techniques you might come across is simple breathing. Regaining control starts with the breath.
Breath has a tranquillizing quality, if you breath correctly and do not force your breath it will steady and relax
you.
Try this now:
Place your hand lightly on your belly
and count slowly to 8 while you take a deep breath in through your nose. . . Feel your belly expand as your lungs
fill with air. PAUSE. Count to 8 again as you slowly exhale
through your mouth -- be sure to expel as much air as you can. PAUSE. Repeat this 5 times and then sit for a moment in silence.
Feel better?
Practice this technique as often as
you can. You'll find that one or two deep breaths when you are feeling stress on-the-go will immediately put your
stress in check and restore your sense of calm.
VISUALIZATION TO
REDUCE STRESS
Visualization is a technique used by
professional athletes can be one of the most effective stress relaxation techniques available for the rest of
us. Visualization is simply the process of creating a mental
image of what you want to happen. For an athlete, this might be a winning performance during a
competition. As a stress relaxation technique it might be
speaking calmly in front of a large audience.
To practice visualization, you will
need to find time and a location where you can have 20
uninterrupted minutes. Sit comfortably and relax your body (the
Breathing exercise above can help with this step). Close your
eyes and create a positive image in your
mind. Envision yourself facing the stressful event with
poise and confidence. Give yourself as much detail as
possible. If you become distracted, that's OK. If you become negative (there should be no stress in this
visualization), just open your eyes, breath deeply and start over. ALWAYS end with a positive image.
You may also find this exercise is
more effective if you practice in the half-sleep state at the end of the day, or before you rise in the morning.
During these times, your brain is at a more receptive state than when your conscious mind is functioning in full
gear.
The more you practice, the easier these stress
relaxation techniques will become. Good visualization skills will enable you to experience and become comfortable
with a situation before you actually have to deal with it. Couple
visualization with healthy breathing skills and you will have two powerful tools to combat the stressors in your
life. When practiced regularly, these two stress relaxation
techniques will put you back in control.
